I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman.

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.

Target has had its share of problems, but their willingness to hire LGBT folks has always impressed me. I live in an area with a large LGBT community - all four of the letters well-represented. And the staff at my local Target reflects that. It’s so nice and sadly unexpected to see large companies stepping up like that.

The Top Five Special Interest Groups Lobbying To Keep Marijuana Illegal

Last year, over 850,000 people in America were arrested for marijuana-related crimes. Despite public opinion, the medical community, and human rights experts all moving in favor of relaxing marijuana prohibition laws, little has changed in terms of policy.

There have been many great books and articles detailing the history of the drug war. Part of America’s fixation with keeping the leafy green plant illegal is rooted in cultural and political clashes from the past.

However, we at Republic Report think it’s worth showing that there are entrenched interest groups that are spending large sums of money to keep our broken drug laws on the books:

If you’re anti-marijuana, you need to reassess your priorities. To clarify: It’s one thing to not want to smoke/ingest it (you do you, choose your choices, etc and so forth). It’s another to side with corporations and privatized prisons to keep racist, classist anti-marijuana laws on the books.

While I’m not on the side of “corporations and privatized prisons [working] to keep racist, classist… laws on the books”, I’m not really in favor of legalizing marijuana, wouldn’t mind seeing more of an argument as to why it SHOULD be legalized just than that some people want to smoke it or that those fighting against it’s legalization are in the wrong…

I would be happy to. Most arguments for legalization relate to the precedent that, if we have prescription narcotics, alcohol, and cigarettes, there’s no reason marijuana should be illegal. There are also legal implications and financial and health-related reasons. I don’t have a *ton* of time to write about this write now, but here’s an overview:

(Please note this is not all directed just at the poster above me. A lot of people have raised this question. This is in no way a personal attack on you, texarshead - I legitimately want to address the question and try to answer it for you.)

PRECEDENT

1) Marijuana is less addictive and has a lower mortality rate than cigarettes and alcohol. If they’re legal, weed should be legal.

2) Marijuana was outlawed largely thanks to William Randolph Hearst, who saw hemp fiber as a threat to his tree-growing paper-making empire. He helped start the “reefer madness” myth and the myth that marijuana is a gateway drug. If pot was banned under false pretenses, it should be re-legalized.

3) The Founding Fathers grew hemp, and actually considered an individual mandate that all Americans must grow hemp for the good of the nation. In other words, it’s what the Founding Fathers would have wanted. (Quick primer: hemp is the male equivalent of the marijuana plant. The plants that actually grow buds of marijuana are female plants. There is some THC in all hemp plants, so every kind of hemp plant, even ones that don’t grow smokeable weed, are banned.)

LEGAL IMPLICATIONS

4) Two thirds of people in prison right now are non-violent drug offenders. Almost all of them are there for weed, and almost all of them are PoC. Many of them are also poor. Anti-marijuana laws disproportionately affect PoC and poor people.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

5) Do you have any idea how much money we’d save on prison costs ALONE if we legalized marijuana? Justice system, DEA agents, etc.

6) If you sell it, you can tax it. California has estimated tax income in the billions if the state were to fully legalize marijuana.

7) Hemp can be made into paper, cloth, and about a hundred other things. It’s faster to grow than trees and more sustainable.

HEALTH REASONS

7) Marijuana is not a gateway drug to harder drugs.

8) Studies are varied with regards to marijuana’s benefits, but some studies have found that cannabinoids inhibit cancerous cell growth.

9) Marijuana increases appetite, which is very helpful to people who can’t keep food down due to chemotherapy or other ailments. Marijuana decreases pain and relaxes the muscles, which is helpful to migraine sufferers, glaucoma patients, and people with other chronic pain issues. Marijuana is good for people who suffer from chronic anxiety and OCD.

FINALLY

10) Why is “some people want to smoke it” not a good enough reason? Things that are WAY more dangerous than marijuana are legal. Things that are way less fun than marijuana are legal. Drugs much stronger than marijuana are legal. I guess this comes back to precedent, but yeah. I mean, why are ATVs legal? Because people want to ride them. Why is alcohol legal? Because people want to drink it. “Just because people want to” is actually a pretty legit reason for legalizing things.

So, in sum, marijuana should be legal because laws against it cost us millions of dollars imprisoning non-violent/non-white/poor people disproportionately, it was banned under false pretenses, and it’s less harmful than already legalized recreational substances.

As much as I’ve tried to distract myself all day, it hasn’t worked. All I can think about is Fresno Basketball tournament 2010 when I became family with someone who impacted my life more than I ever let him know. I got one of those huge 2 gallon things of Hawaiian Punch and was dressed like my usually bumself and he said, “Look at this nigga dressed like a gangster & drinking all that kool-aid, that’s AWESOME”.

Then I kept thinking about the time I randomly offered my house to him so we could watch UFC 117: Silva v Sonnen I. We chilled for three hours just talking and watching one of the best UFC cards of all time.

Another UFC memory I have of him is one time during the some gymnastic show at school me & him snuck off to Hicks’s office and tried watching a pay per view on a terrible quality illegal stream.

I always teased him when the Lakers failed. I’m gonna miss doing that.

I wish I wasn’t so damn lazy. It’s not like I’m NOT trying to get a job, but I could be trying harder. Sitting on my ass all day watching various TV shows on Netflix. I mean seriously the fuck am I doing with my life. Starting the habit with weed mighta been the worst thing I coulda done to myself. Because foreals I’m already the laziest person I know & now doing something that only increases my laziness? Shit wtf are you thinking Stevo? I mean don’t get me wrong Mary Jane is amazing but it’s financially stupid for me to be doing right now. I need money & the little that i do have I spend on fucking retarded shit. Lotto tickets, weed, Lego kits & slurpees. I’m a combination of a homeless person & a 10 year old. Well I have 3 homes & I’m twice that age dammit. It’s still my constant dream to win the lottery tho. I think about it all the time, how amazing life will be once I get that winning ticket.

I’ve had a good summer, no hatin on summer now. Warped tour was awesome yet tiring. Goin to Buffalo Wild Wings with different friends. Demi Lovato concert. Plenty of fun activities but it’s hard to truly have fun when I’m an unemployed loser ya know? It’s always in the back of my mind. I should be taking full advantage of living at home & make money while I’m not paying rent. Shit man I’m so frustrated with myself. I’m so damn ashamed when people ask me if/when I’m going back to Tennessee. I just wanna tell them the full truth- I fucked up. I wasted time, money and life. I didn’t even try academically or socially for that matter. I just let life pass me by for two semesters and in the process became a full fledged insomniac. I stay up till 4 with ease on most days. Also while I was over in Dirty South I fell for a girl who I will never ever be with. I thought dumb shit like that would be over with when I left high school. Wrong, asshole. I’m too picky I guess when it comes to job hunting. I’m nervous about any jobs that drug test employee candidates. I want a job that I’m near. But all the jobs that catch my interest on Craigslist or otherwise, usually require a year or more of experience. Like where the fuck am I supposed to get this experience?! Working in my mom & dad’s shop, oh wait it’s not the fucking 50s when everyone’s parents own a store/business.

At this point I’m just venting. I guess my main frustration, I thought life would be easier once I got back from Tennessee and started really driving around for the first time in my life. My plan in life (obviously Plan A is winning the lotto) is to do some generals at De Anza & eventually end up in bartending school. On a related note I really hate this commercial that basically gives this guy the options of being a plumber or a doctor. Like what the fuck. Yesterday I think I drove umm…under the influence all the way up to Hayward & back. I’m not proud of that, but I am thankful to what ever higher power exists, that I’m alive.

I wouldn’t say that I’m totally atheist, but it sure is hard as fuck to believe in a caring God when scumbags like Rush Limbaugh are breathing and people that contribute nothing to society like me even exist while good people who are a joy to be around and give everything in life 100% and are truly a good person, DIE. For no reason sometimes. What kind of fucking God is that? Honestly though, you will NEVER catch me saying “FML I HATE MY LIFE” because I know how damn good I have it compared to some people in this world, I will never take for granted the loving family and people I have around me. Which may be why this Colorado shooting has me a bit shook. I don’t know what the hell I would do if someone I loved was shot like that. I hope that ginger piece of shit is raped and beaten in prison.
